Position Purpose

The Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) performs the functions of preparing for, performing and reporting postmortem examinations, and/or surgical specimen dissection under a licensed pathology physician’s supervision and direction.

Nature and Scope

SUPERVISION:

1. All entries in the medical record (with the exception of the Discharge Summary) as permitted under Nature and Scope, or in the specific Appendix, must be co-signed by the supervising physician within the next calendar day.

2. The Pathologists’ Assistant must at all times comply with the provisions of Nevada Revised Statue and other regulations that set forth the practice of a Pathologists’ Assistant in the State of Nevada.

3. The supervising physician(s) is/are responsible for the actions of the Pathologists’ Assistant at all times.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

1. Adopts a philosophy consistent with the RENOWN HEALTH Purpose Statement and models "Standards of Conduct" Concepts.

2. Effective communication skills &- written and verbal.

3. Ability to establish positive working relations with Provider Staff.

4. Work efficiently and cooperatively in a multi-physician/provider office setting.

5. Work as part of a team toward department goals.

6. Maintains accurate, legible, and confidential records.

7. Actively participate in quality assurance, peer review programs, and health care outcome evaluations.

8. Ensures the highest quality of care requiring a code of ethical practice, evidence of continuing professional development, and maintenance of clinical skills.

9. Patient advocate through ethical and legal standards.

14. The Pathologists’ Assistant shall at all times comply with the provisions of NAC 652.452.

15. The Supervising physician is responsible for the action of the Pathologists’ Assistant at all times.

16. Will attain sufficient knowledge in the specialty and assure appropriate on-going education, such as knowledge of all core’s educational programs, as applicable.

17. Attend and participate in Pathology department and Renown Health meetings consistently.

18. Knowledge of Policies and Procedures for the areas of the Hospital within which the Pathologists’ Assistant will function.

19. Documentation of skills must be provided as a list of specimens for which the Pathologists’ Assistant has gained approval for examining with such examination to include specimen overview, morphologic description, dissection, sampling, and triage of various portions of the specimen to special procedures under direct and indirect supervision of the pathologist. The scope of conduct specifically excludes the rendering of any gross or microscopic diagnosis, which will be the responsibility of the supervising pathologist.

20. All specimen types on the approval list will be directly supervised by a mentoring pathologist until the pathologist gives initial approval that he/she is comfortable with the performance of the Pathologists’ Assistant for each specimen type.

21. The performance of the Pathologists’ Assistant will be re-evaluated by direct supervision and documented on a yearly basis for at least 50 different specimens on the approved specimen list.

This position does provide patient care.

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Possess a Baccalaureate Degree with a major or minor in biological science or an allied health field and a master’s degree in health science from a NAACLS Accredited University.

Experience:

Minimum of three (3) years of combined experience in surgical and autopsy pathology

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Pathologists’ Assistant license OR State of Nevada General Supervisor of a Licensed Laboratory (GSML).

Pathologists' Assistant is preferred over the General Supervisor of a Licensed Laboratory

Certification(s):

None

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.

Ability to Credential through Renown’s Medical Staff and/or Payor Credentialing, as applicable
