Specialized Assignment Recruitment - Voluntary
Training Officer Alternate

Interviews will be held only if a vacancy for the voluntary assignment occurs. When a vacancy occurs, an email will be sent to the Police Department at least 14 calendar days prior to the interview date(s) announcing the vacancy, application deadline, and the date(s) of the interview. These interviews will establish a ranked list of candidates from which to select in order to fill vacancies and may be utilized until December 31, 2026.


Since this is a voluntary assignment, there will not be any Assignment Differential Pay (ADP) associated with this posting.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements to apply:

  • HPD Police Officer with 3 years at HPD.
  • Instructor Development
  • A candidate must not be on probationary status (probationary status is NOT the equivalent of being on a qualifying period.)
  • No sustained Class 4-7 internal investigations in the prior twenty-four months from the date the posting closes. Sustained date is defined as the date the Chief signs the Final Discipline Notice memorandum.
  • No more than two sustained Class 2-3 internal investigations in the prior twenty-four months from the date the posting closes. Sustained date is defined as the date the Chief signs the Final Discipline Notice memorandum.
  • No more than three sustained Class 1 internal investigations in the prior twenty-four months from the date the posting closes. Sustained date is defined as the date the Chief signs the Final Discipline Notice memorandum.
Additional Qualifications/Characteristics:
  • Prior FTO preferred
  • Instructor Development
General Qualifications/Characteristics for all candidates:
(May be adjusted, based on department needs, with the approval of the Chief of Police.)
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess excellent writing and oral communications skills.
  • Must be willing to work overtime, evenings and weekends under a variety of conditions.
  • Must be willing to accept any assignment and work various hours and days, to include weekends.
  • Must be willing to provide periodic training to department employees, other agencies, and citizens.
  • Must be willing to attend specialized trainings including successfully completing all required assignments and tests.
  • Must have no outside employment, interests or personal commitments that could unduly interfere with assigned responsibilities as determined by the appropriate Division Commander for the respective specialized assignment.
  • Must be willing to carry and be contacted by cell phone, 24 hours a day/7-days a week, in order to provide information or respond to call-outs as necessary.
  • Certified Acting Sergeant (CAS) / Field Training Officer (FTO) / Officer in Charge (OIC) experience is preferred.
  • Experience on various shifts and area commands preferred.
  • Depending on the type of assignment offered, some entry-level experience may be preferred, while other positions may require a higher level of experience and expertise. The preferred level of experience or expertise will be included in the specialized assignment application announcement

ASSESSMENT DATES:

Structured Interview (Weighted 100%) - Interviews will be held when a vacancy for this specialized assignment occurs.

A passing score of 70% is the minimum passing score for placement on the ranked list.
